GRAVNER

GRAVNER

Josko Gravner has been Friuli’s most respected and significant winemaker since the 1980s. He is a visionary and eccentric and he talks straight. He will not stutter to tell you that he is not in a rush to sell his wines or that he doesn’t believe in organic or biodynamic because they are just marketing words...worse still..that his current vintage is not as good as his last or that he is not going to sell his wine until they are ready to drink – usually 7 years.

Gravner is based in Oslavia in the rolling Collio hills straddling the Italian/Slovenian border, and currently has 18 hectares under vine. The goal is to end up with 25 hectares under vine, but this might take some time, since as a perfectionist he is selling parcels off that he doesn’t like, fine-tuning the vineyards based on observation and experience.

Gravner is famous for his adoption of clay amphorae imported from Georgia for elevage.
